Spring Couplets & Door Gods Set ·
The Year of the Goat, at your door
One set for the front door and one scroll for inside: spring couplets, a lintel banner, the 招财进宝 square and a pair of door gods to keep the door, and a Shenxiao talisman calendar to hang in the southwest corner for the whole of 2027, the year of 丁未.

01 · Spring couplets
The earth holds a hundred blessings

Spring couplets are pairs of lines pasted either side of the door at Lunar New Year. These two both begin with the earth: 坤载百福门庭旺, “the earth holds a hundred blessings, and the house flourishes”, and 地呈千祥家业兴, “the land offers a thousand good omens, and the family’s fortunes rise”.
Above the door goes the banner 喜气盈庭, “joy fills the courtyard”. In the middle of the door, the square 招财进宝: four characters, “bring in wealth, let treasure in”, drawn as a single glyph.
Each character sits in its own gold-ringed circle, in the manner of seal script, on red paper flecked with gold.
In the year of 丁未, a pair of red papers: the virtue of heaven and earth above, the wishes of the household below.
02 · Door gods
Two guardians, face to face

The story goes that the Tang emperor Taizong could not sleep for the spirits troubling his palace at night, until his generals Qin Qiong and Yuchi Gong stood guard at the gate in their armour. Their portraits were later painted on the gate in their place, and so they became the door gods of every house. Pasted face to face, they keep ill fortune out and see the household safely in and out.
Put up once a year, they keep the door, and they set the heart at ease.
03 · The Shenxiao talisman calendar
One talisman for one year

Shenxiao (神霄, the “Divine Empyrean”) is a school of Daoist ritual that grew out of the Heavenly Masters tradition at the end of the Northern Song, in the early twelfth century. It is known for its thunder rites and thunder talismans, and takes its name from the highest of the nine heavens in the Scripture of Salvation (度人经). Its best-known masters were Wang Wenqing and Lin Lingsu, and Emperor Huizong championed it at court.
This talisman is drawn in cinnabar, the colour of pure yang, in cloud-seal script whose strokes run on without a break. It reads from top to bottom, head, core and foot: drawing on the breath of the Three Pure Ones, holding the command that keeps the house, and closing back into one.

Where it hangs. In the southwest corner of the living room or a bedroom: the position of 坤 (kun), which is the earth, the mother and the storehouse, and stands for a peaceful home and savings kept. A settled house keeps its people well; a full storehouse keeps the family’s fortunes running smoothly.
Below the talisman is the whole calendar of 2027. One talisman for one year, renewed with each calendar, the days and months turning under its care.
04 · Putting it up
Each piece in its place

- Facing the door, the upper couplet goes on the right and the lower couplet on the left, with the banner above the lintel.
- The 招财进宝 square goes in the middle of the door, turned as a diamond.
- The door gods go on the upper half of the two door leaves, facing each other.
- The talisman calendar hangs indoors, in the southwest corner of the living room or a bedroom.
Couplets and door gods are traditionally put up on the last day of the lunar year, after taking down last year’s and wiping the door. For the year of 丁未 that is 5 February 2027; the new year begins on 6 February.
